The forecasters at the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) are warning snowmobilers about the potential for avalanches this coming weekend. This warning is for the southern interior of BC, from Clearwater south to the US border, and from Greenwood east to the Alberta border.
The snowpack throughout this area has a number of weak layers, some that are buried very deeply. These weak layers cannot be seen or felt on the surface of the snow but if they fail, they have the potential to trigger very large and dangerous avalanches.
Unless you have a very good knowledge of the snowpack in your area, CAC forecasters are urging backcountry riders to stay away from large, steep slopes at all elevations and aspects. Warmth from the sun can also trigger these weak layers, so be aware of south and west facing slopes if the sun is out for an extended period.
For more information on the snowpack in your area, check the public avalanche bulletins online at www.avalanche.ca. Click on the Canadian Avalanche Centre logo, and you’ll find our current bulletins under the “bulletins” tab. Finally, if you’re heading into the backcountry, please remember that everyone in your party needs to have a shovel, probe and beacon.
